TASTING NOTES
AROMA
Classic Stevens, with its vibrant citrus lift and a touch of herbaceousness in the background.
PALATE
The palate is richer than the previous few vintages however, it still shows the typical lime citrus core of fruit with a mineral edge and a chalky finish.
REGION NOTES
Stevens Semillon comes from the Tyrrell family-owned Stevens Vineyard on Marrowbone Road, Pokolbin, our southernmost Semillon vineyard. It features a combination of light, sandy loams and darker, heavier transitional soils with the oldest plantings being from 1911.
WINEMAKERS COMMENTS
Our Single Vineyard wines champion the unique qualities of each individual vineyard, showcasing wines with distinct character shaped by their specific terroir. These vineyards contain some of the world’s most important viticultural assets that have an enviable track record of producing world-class wines; all planted on their own roots using pre-phylloxera material, with the cornerstone of these being old-vine Semillon, Australia’s most unique wine style. For most of our history, Tyrrell’s has produced its wines by blending parcels from different vineyards. However, in 1983, we created the HVD Semillon, our first formally recognised single vineyard wine. Throughout the 1980s, we continued to investigate how the location and soil of each individual vineyard influence the unique flavour of the wines they produce. Then, in 1992, fourth generation Bruce Tyrrell struck a deal to buy grapes from the Stevens family, sealing it with a handshake. This key move enabled us to focus on the intrinsic quality of the great single vineyards of the Hunter Valley. Since then, we’ve set out to lease or purchase the very best vineyard sites in the Hunter Valley, with our 168 years of generational knowledge and understanding of our region playing a critical role in identifying these distinctive sites. The redefining of the vineyard source of our top wines has been the major change at Tyrrell’s over the past 40 years. The Single Vineyard collection contains many of Australia’s most sought-after wines with proven quality, pedigree and age-ability.
VINTAGE NOTES
The autumn and winter months of 2020 saw the worst drought in a generation be broken with substantial rainfall, which led into an outstanding growing season for the 2021 vintage. A cool summer then gave us even, stress-free ripening with some heat around Australia Day that was perfectly timed at the final stages of ripening. With an early budburst and later than normal harvesting, the fruit had a longer than normal hang time, which meant that all the fruit had wonderful flavours balanced by a high natural acidity.
VINIFICATION
As always, Stevens Semillon was one of the first Semillon blocks that we picked. In 2021, picking took place in the early hours of the morning on the 26, 27, and 28 January. The grapes were lightly pressed, and the free-run juice was fermented at cool temperatures in stainlesssteel tanks. The wine stayed in these tanks until bottling in early July 2021.
