WINEMAKERS COMMENTS

Each wine in the Winemaker Series is as distinctive as its namesake. This collection showcases the signature varietals nurtured, harvested, and expertly blended by our Viticulturist and Winemaker, Tom Ward. Named after Tom’s father and the founder of Swinging Bridge, Mark Andrew Ward, MAW is made from a selection of Pinot Noir clones from across Orange. Meticulous winemaking, coupled with the Orange Region’s optimal growing conditions for Pinot delivers a sumptuously juicy and fruit forward wine with savoury complexity and excellent cellaring potential.

FOOD MATCHING

Duck breast with a cherry jus.

VINIFICATION

The fruit was harvested using a combination of hand picking and selective machine harvesting before being transferred to the winery and cold soaked for 3–5 days to build colour, flavour and tannin complexity. As the must naturally warmed, fermentation commenced with a combination of plunging and pump overs used throughout ferment to gently manage extraction. The wine was pressed at the completion of ferment and transferred to barrel to undergo malolactic fermentation. Once malolactic dryness was reached, the wines were sulfured and matured for 8 months in French oak puncheons, of which approximately 20% were new. Each clone was matured separately before blending to best reflect the vintage and Swinging Bridge style.

VINTAGE NOTES

The 2025 season began with early budburst and favourable growing conditions across Orange. Good water availability from winter rainfall supported strong vine growth through spring and early summer, whilst warm conditions and a dry finish to the season delivered excellent ripening conditions post veraison. Higher rainfall earlier in the season did increase disease pressure, requiring extensive canopy management throughout the vineyard including shoot thinning, leaf plucking, fruit thinning and trimming. Pinot Noir in particular was incredibly fruitful, with some blocks requiring up to 40% bunch thinning to achieve balance. The result was some of the best Pinot Noir canopies we have seen to date, with even ripening, extended hang time and excellent tannin development across all five clones (Abel, 667, 777, MV6 and 115) selected for the final blend.
