Tasting Notes

Aroma
Fresh red fruits with delicate spices. Lifted notes of whole bunch and pepper with underlying plum and strawberry fruits.

Palate
Juicy red fruits and a lovely crunch of acidity give vibrancy and drive to the palate. Savoury shiraz notes of pepper and earth are intertwined with more pure fruits and florals.

Vinification
Fermented in concrete vats with a mix of whole berries and 15% whole bunches. Fruit was left on skins for two weeks before being basket-pressed into large format old oak for maturation.

Vintage notes
The vintage threw up a number of challenges but the weather during the ripening period was extremely kind. February saw perfectly even ripening and resulted in grapes that were small, packed with flavour, and with higher than normal acidity.

Region notes
Shiraz from a single site in Echunga. A cooler site in the hills and composed of deep free-draining loams peppered with large pieces of ironstone and weathered sandstone.

Cellaring potential
Ideal drinking now and for up to another 5 years.

James Halliday- 94 points, From an Adelaide Hills vineyard outside Shaw + Smith’s usual remit, this time from the Echunga district, vinified in neutral concrete vats using a mix of whole berries and 15% whole bunches. A lighter-bodied style, redolent with bright plum fruit, offset with a subtle background of wood and stems, underpinned by a gentle spice and earthiness. Quite delicious and immensely drinkable. The Other Wine Co. is a new venture that aims to make wines from the right grape, grown in the right place. That may sound obvious, but it's a principal honoured more "in the breach than the observance." Really good matches of variety and place take a long time to become established, but when they do, the proof is in the glass. The Other Wine Co. wines are entirely vinified and bottled at Shaw + Smith in Balhannah. The wines are "other" partly because they give the winemakers a chance to lay with varieties and regions that don't fit into Shaw + Smith. They are also an "other" perspective from so many wines that favour over-ripeness and oak instead of freshness and balance, and power over drinkability. These are made to drink and enjoy. That's it!
