Tasting Notes

Palate
A small addition of co-fermented Viognier (planted nearby) filled out the palate and completed the wines delicate tannin profile.

Region notes
For 2022, ‘The Blonde’ came from a vineyard planted in the ‘Barossa Ranges’ of the Eden Valley GI. The Shiraz (at 450m elevation) was planted in 1962 on an east west downwards slope protected by the afternoon sun. The soils are granitic and sandy over limestone and clay.

Winemakers comments
It is worth noting that I am trying to pursue finesse and elegance with this wine, always thinking about how to make the wine better, not bigger. The only additions made to this wine were 20% new oak and I hope you feel the same uninterrupted flow, harmony and pleasantness that I feel it should convey.

Vinification
2t open top stainless steel, indigenous yeast, two-week ferment, hand-plunging & pump-over twice daily.

Maturation
18 months on fine lees, 20% new French oak 500L.

Very deep, glowing colour—more purple than red at this tender age. The bouquet is pristinely fresh, clean and bright, exuding blueberry and blackberry fruit aromas laced with varied spices that include pepper, while the palate is full-bodied and nicely concentrated, without excessive heft or grip, and the oak has been subtly played. The tannins are supple and rounded, so the wine can already be approached, although it would be premature to drink it now.

Just a baby, this has a pristine bouquet of blueberry and blackberry laced with varied spices that include pepper. The palate is full-bodied and well concentrated, without excessive grip, and typical of Head’s reds, oak has been subtly played.
