Personalised Stonier Reserve Pinot Noir 2023 13.5% 750ml
TASTING NOTES
AROMA
Notes of truffles, wild strawberry, blueberry and cocoa all jump from the glass.
PALATE
The overriding character of the palate is the svelte like tannins. There is succulence across the palate, but equally the freshness of fruit adds youth and vibrancy. A statement wine.
VINIFICATION
Ferment was around 30% whole inclusion, wild fermented for an average of 18 days on skins. Barrel elevage was extended to 13 months to allow greater tannin evolution. The wine was bottled without fining or filtration. 220 dozen total production.
MATURATION
All aged in French 500 L puncheons of which 25% were new.
VINTAGE NOTES
A cool spring in 2022 lead to a smaller than average harvest in 2023. However conditions from late January onwards were dry and warm, resulting in a late harvest, but with supple and ripe fruit.
REGION NOTES
The 2023 Stonier Reserve was selected from the most expressive and densely flavoured Pinot parcels on our estate vineyard in Merricks; the Windmill, Stonier Family and KBS blocks. These blocks are noted for the deepness of their red soils and warmer aspect in what was a cooler year.
WINEMAKERS COMMENTS
Voluminous in its nature and varietal at its core, the 2023 Reserve Pinot exemplifies the unique nature of our site, straddling the line between beauty and power.
92 Points
Medium red with a tinge of brick showing some early development; lots of stemmy whole-bunch aromas, notes of chinotto or Campari—bitter Italian herb drinks. This gives it a slight hardness, a slight astringency which builds at the finish and lingers afterwards. The acidity seems to harden it. Extended time in the glass brought a more balanced bouquet and a more resolved palate, so give it plenty of air. Better still, cellar it.
