Chambers Rutherglen Muscadelle 18% 750ml

Founded in 1858 by William Chambers and situated just one kilometre west of Rutherglen, on the Corowa road. The original vineyards which were replanted after phylloxera attacked the area in the late 1890's now have some irrigation, and produce low tonnages with wonderful concentrated flavour. Rosewood's fifth generation winemaker Bill Chambers OAM, handed over to son Stephen in 2001. The proud tradition of winemaking continues from the rich old fortified wines made in the early 1900s by great grandfather Will Chambers who started off the wonderful Tokay and Muscat blends which today are renowned throughout the world. The Rare Muscat and Rare Tokay consistently receive perfect, 100 out of 100 scores from the influential wine writer Robert Parker Junior of the Wine Spectator who refers to Bill as the "Master of the Fortified wine business of Australia".

Reviews:

James Halliday, Halliday Wine Companion - 93 Pts

Bright, clear golden orange hue. Even though very young, its time in oak has added some complexity to the wanton display of malt, butterscotch, cold tea, nuts and spices. It is lusciously sweet, of course, yet leaves the mouth fresh. It is ludicrously good value for 750ml. But do remember, it won't change with age, the upside that it will last for many, many weeks after being opened.

Jeni Port, Halliday Wine Companion - 92 Pts

The perfect introduction to a Rutherglen fortified muscadelle – aka, Topaque – blended by one of the best in the business. Indeed, Stephen Chambers learnt from the best – his father, Bill, who sadly passed away in 2023. Take a sip, enjoy the youthful vitality, the nutty maltiness, toffee, raisins and sweet generosity at a fair price and make a toast to Bill. 750ml.
