Palate
Cuvee Madeline 2021 embodies the unique expression of our Mount Pisa vineyard's schist and quartz soils. Here, veins, reefs, and seams of quartz and schist interlace with clays and loams, crafting a wine that showcases the precision and minerality characteristic of these distinctive soils.
Region notes
Mount Pisa Vineyard, Central Otago. Selected parcels predominantly from schist/quartz soils. Originally referred to as "fine bones," reflecting the earth, vine gestures and wine character.
Vinification
Our winemaking techniques are simple and gentle to allow for the transfer from soil to wine and to capture the season. Fermentation is natural, either spontaneous or encouraged by use of pied de cuve. Harvested April 2nd and bottled November 22nd 2022. Average yield was 3.5 t/ha (ranging from 2.6 to 4.3 t/ha across different parcels). Fermentation: Multiple small batch fermentations captured precise expressions of each vineyard section. Whole bunch inclusion varied by ferment (4% to 30%, averaging ~14%). Extended maceration averaged 23 days on skins. Pressing was small batch, either direct to barrel or with one night's settling before barreling down. Malolactic fermentation completed in barrel. Maturation occurred in a combination of French oak barrels and demi-muids (21% new oak).
Vintage notes
For harvest 2021, we had not yet conceptualised our cuvées, yet these parcels revealed their distinct character. In areas that would become Madeline, petite vines clung tenaciously to rigid schist and reflective quartz, their above ground demeanour mirroring the ground beneath. Delicate bunches bore sparse, fine little berries.
