Mountadam High Eden The Red 2017 14.5% 750ml

Mountadam High Eden The Red 2017 14.5% 750ml

Expert Review:
James Halliday- 90 points, From the Mountadam High Eden vineyard at 550m elevation, a selection of the best fruit of the estate. 67/33% cabernet sauvignon/merlot, fermented and matured in 100% new French oak barriques. An edgy vintage for cabernet and merlot at this altitude. Here is a blend in which leafy, herbal spice, sappy tannins and sour acidity collide with biscuity oak and firm tannins. It screams out for time to pull itself together, but will never attain the heights of the great seasons.

Established in 1972 as one of Australia's pioneer Chardonnay producers, Mountadam was founded by the late David Wynn, without question one of the most significant contributors to the Australian wine industry and an important part of the Mountadam story. In selecting the land for the Mountadam vineyard, Wynn was the first to recognise the potential of a cool, elevated site to produce wines of great elegance and structure, and chose an area high above the Eden Valley, which he named High Eden. At 570 metres above sea level, Mountadam is still to this day one of Australia's most elevated vineyards. As of 2005, the vineyard has been owned by South Australian businessman David Brown, who has made significant investment in vineyard improvement and expansion.
